BJP Gains Ground as Three AAP Rebels Join Ahead of Punjab Polls

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has received a political boost in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with three rebel Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators switching sides and joining the saffron party in New Delhi on November 2, 2026. The entry of Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jouramajra represents a setback for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's government and raises fresh questions about AAP's internal unity as the state enters an increasingly active pre-election phase.

Who Are the Three Leaders and Why Did They Quit AAP?

The defections follow months of internal disagreements and disciplinary action within AAP.

The three leaders are:

·       Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh: MLA from Amritsar North and a former IPS officer, he was suspended by AAP on June 29, 2025. He resigned from the Punjab Assembly on November 2, with his resignation effective November 1.

·       Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra: MLA from Sanaur, he was suspended over alleged anti-party activities before resigning from AAP's primary membership.

·       Chetan Singh Jouramajra: MLA from Samana and a former Punjab minister, he was also suspended over alleged anti-party activities before leaving the party.

They joined the BJP at its Delhi headquarters in the presence of Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon and other senior leaders.

After joining, the leaders criticised the Mann government over governance, corruption and law-and-order concerns. They also advocated adopting the so-called Uttar Pradesh model of administration in Punjab.

Why The Timing Is Politically Significant

The defections came immediately after AAP announced its first candidate list for the 2027 Assembly elections.

The party has renominated 40 sitting MLAs from their existing constituencies, including Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann from Dhuri and jailed minister Sanjeev Arora from Ludhiana West.

By announcing candidates early, AAP intends to gain an organisational advantage in Punjab's 117-member Assembly election. However, losing three prominent legislators at this stage weakens its attempt to project political stability and organisational cohesion.

What Does the BJP Gain from The Switch?

The BJP gains three recognised political faces with established local connections in Amritsar North, Sanaur and Samana.

The immediate implications are:

·       For BJP: An opportunity to strengthen its grassroots presence and attract dissatisfied AAP supporters.

· For AAP: Questions over internal discipline, leadership management and growing anti-incumbency.

·    For Punjab politics: Greater potential for a triangular contest as BJP attempts to position itself as an alternative to the ruling party.

The practical legislative impact may remain limited if AAP retains its broader majority. However, the political and symbolic implications are considerable, particularly because the departing leaders include a former police officer, a former minister and representatives of important constituencies.

Punjab's 2027 Electoral Battle Begins Taking Shape

The BJP is likely to project the defections as evidence of growing dissatisfaction with the Mann government. AAP, meanwhile, can argue that the departing leaders were already suspended or politically marginalised, reducing the significance of their exit.

From Political Defections to Electoral Test

The real challenge for the BJP will be converting these high-profile inductions into organisational strength and electoral support. For AAP, the priority will be containing internal dissent and defending its governance record. With candidate selection already underway and political realignments gathering momentum, Punjab's 2027 electoral battle is beginning well ahead of the formal campaign season.
