Sensex Rebounds 483 Points as Investors Weigh Persistent Risks

Sensex rises 483 points, Nifty above 22,750 as IT, metals lead rebound. Indian equity markets recovered on Monday, October 26, 2026, ending a four-session losing streak after opening weakly. However, elevated crude oil prices, rupee depreciation and geopolitical uncertainty continued to temper investor confidence, making the rally a cautious recovery rather than confirmation of a sustained market reversal.

Metal, Pharma and IT Stocks Lead Recovery

The BSE Sensex advanced 482.92 points, or 0.66%, to close at 73,606.75, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 153.20 points, or 0.68%, settling at 22,753.20. Buying picked up towards the closing bell, helping both benchmarks recover from their intraday lows.

Sectoral performance supported the rebound:

·       Metals: The Nifty Metal index gained 2.21%, with JSW Steel among the notable gainers.

·       Pharmaceuticals: The Nifty Pharma index rose 1.76%, reflecting renewed buying interest in defensive stocks.

·       Information technology: The Nifty IT index advanced 0.87%, contributing to the broader recovery.

·       Oil and gas: The sector gained 1.35%, despite persistent concerns over expensive energy imports.

The gains reflected value buying after the previous week's sharp correction, rather than a fundamental improvement across all sectors.

Broader Markets Join the Upward Movement

The recovery extended beyond large-cap stocks. The Nifty 100 rose 0.73%, the Nifty 200 gained 0.82% and the Nifty 500 advanced 0.85%. Midcap and smallcap indices also recorded gains, indicating that investors were selectively returning to recently battered shares.

Nevertheless, the previous week's losses remain significant: the Nifty declined approximately 2.4%, while the Sensex fell 2.2% over four consecutive sessions.

Crude Oil and Rupee Keep Investors Cautious

Brent crude remained elevated, trading around $115 per barrel amid Middle East tensions. Higher oil prices can increase India's import bill, intensify inflationary pressures and raise costs for energy-dependent industries.

Meanwhile, the rupee weakened to approximately ₹95.19 against the US dollar on Monday. Currency depreciation makes imports costlier and can affect foreign investment flows. These pressures explain why investors remain cautious despite the market's recovery.

Can the Rebound Sustain Its Momentum?

Investors will monitor quarterly earnings, global oil prices, currency movements and upcoming central-bank policy decisions. Technically, the Nifty's ability to sustain levels around 22,700–22,800 will be important.

Recovery Needs Stronger Foundations

Monday's gains restored some confidence, but they do not establish a lasting upward trend. Sustained recovery will require easing external risks, stable currency movements and stronger corporate earnings, rather than temporary bargain hunting alone.
