North Block Fire Raises Safety Concerns

An electrical fire at one of India's most prominent government buildings highlights the importance of preventive maintenance, fire-safety audits and emergency preparedness.

New Delhi, October 26, 2026: A fire broke out on the rooftop of North Block, the historic administrative building on Raisina Hill in New Delhi, on Monday morning, sending thick black smoke into the sky and prompting an immediate response from the Delhi Fire Services.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. when a suspected electrical short circuit triggered a fire involving rooftop air-conditioning equipment. Welding work was reportedly underway in the area when the incident occurred.

Six fire engines were dispatched to the location, and firefighters subsequently brought the blaze under control.

The incident attracted attention because North Block is part of India's historic central administrative complex, making fire safety and infrastructure maintenance particularly important.

Although the immediate emergency was contained, the incident raises broader questions about electrical safety, maintenance procedures and the management of potential fire hazards in government buildings.
