Indian Railways has strengthened the fairness of its Tatkal ticket booking system by implementing Aadhaar-based OTP authentication across 322 trains, significantly reducing misuse by bots, agents, and fake accounts. The move ensures that Tatkal tickets are booked only by genuine passengers, restoring transparency in one of the most high-demand railway services.
As part of the cleanup, the Railways has deleted 3.02 crore suspicious or inactive user IDs from its booking system. These accounts were allegedly used for automated bookings, multiple logins, or agent-driven manipulation that disadvantaged regular passengers during peak booking windows.
Under the new system, users booking Tatkal tickets must authenticate their identity through an Aadhaar-linked OTP, making automated and bulk bookings far more difficult. Early results indicate improved booking success rates for individual users and reduced system congestion during Tatkal hours.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader push to integrate Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)—leveraging Aadhaar to enhance trust, accountability, and service delivery at population scale. Officials have indicated that the Aadhaar OTP mechanism may be expanded to more trains and booking categories based on performance and user feedback.
By combining identity verification with large-scale account cleanup, Indian Railways is signaling a decisive shift toward citizen-first digital governance, ensuring that technology protects fairness rather than enabling exploitation.
