A dramatic late-night security scare unfolded in Jammu after a gunman attempted to shoot senior political leaders outside a wedding venue, triggering panic and swift intervention by security forces.
Gunfire Outside Wedding Venue
The incident occurred in the Greater Kailash locality of Jammu as Abdullah and Choudhary were leaving a wedding reception at the Royal Park marriage hall. The event was held to celebrate the marriage of the son of party leader B. S. Chouhan.
Police say the assailant, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal from Purani Mandi, approached the leaders from behind armed with a pistol. He allegedly fired a shot at point-blank range, but security personnel— including commandos from the National Security Guard along with a police inspector and sub-inspector— reacted instantly. Officers reportedly deflected the shot and subdued the attacker before he could fire again.
Jamwal was arrested at the scene amid outrage from bystanders. During initial questioning, he reportedly told investigators he had been planning the attack for nearly two decades.
Leaders React, Probe Underway
Reacting to the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the shooting as an “assassination attempt” targeting his father, who is under Z+ security cover.
“Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave,” Omar Abdullah said while thanking the security team for their swift response and raising concerns about possible security lapses.
Police confirmed the pistol used in the attack has been seized and a detailed investigation is underway to determine the motive and whether the suspect acted alone. CCTV and eyewitness footage from outside the venue show chaotic moments as security personnel rushed to neutralize the threat and secure the area.
