A 51-year-old man died in West Bengal's Bankura district after suffering severe injuries in an alleged assault on his family, an incident that has ignited a political controversy over claims that the attack was linked to his son's participation in a protest highlighting poor school infrastructure. The victim, Sheikh Mohammad Mafik, succumbed to head injuries two days after the assault, while police have arrested eight people and launched a murder investigation. As the case unfolds, allegations and counter-allegations between political rivals have intensified, even as investigators say the probe is still underway.
How the Incident Unfolded
The violence occurred in Karisunda village under Indas block on August 13, shortly after Mafik's son, Sheikh Abdul Hafiz, participated in the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) "School Thik Karo" campaign.
As part of the initiative, Hafiz had reportedly visited Karishunda Paschimpara Primary School to document alleged deficiencies in infrastructure and management. According to the family's complaint, a group of armed men later entered their house and attacked Hafiz, his father and other family members using sticks, iron rods and a tangi, a sharp-edged agricultural weapon.
Mafik allegedly sustained a critical head injury while trying to shield his son during the assault.
From Hospitalisation to Tragedy
After receiving initial treatment locally, Mafik was shifted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, where he died on August 15.
The attack left several members of the family injured, and the death transformed what began as an assault case into a murder investigation. The incident has drawn statewide attention because it followed a local campaign centred on public education, an issue that has become politically contentious in Bengal.
Political Allegations and Official Response
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has alleged that the attackers were local BJP workers targeting Hafiz for his activism, including his participation in a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and his school-inspection campaign.
However, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari rejected allegations of BJP organisational involvement. He stated that the First Information Report does not identify the attack as a BJP-led assault and argued that the accused should be treated as "miscreants" unless evidence establishes a political connection.
Police have also maintained that the investigation remains evidence-based and that no official conclusion has yet been reached regarding the political affiliations of those arrested.
Investigation Gains Momentum
Mafik's wife, Hasina Begum, lodged a written complaint at Indas Police Station on August 16, naming five individuals and alleging the involvement of several unidentified attackers.
Police have arrested eight accused, three of whom were named in the complaint. Some have been remanded to police custody, while others will undergo test identification parades as investigators gather witness testimony and forensic evidence.
Authorities have assured that the investigation will examine every aspect of the assault, including its possible motive.
