Modi’s Bengal Visit Blends Welfare, Yoga and Defence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to West Bengal on June 20–21, where he is scheduled to launch development projects, release the 23rd instalment of the PM-KISAN scheme, participate in International Yoga Day celebrations and attend a major programme at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port. The visit combines governance, public outreach and strategic messaging, while highlighting the Centre’s emphasis on welfare delivery, cultural engagement and defence self-reliance.

Background and Political Context

The visit coincides with Paschimbanga Divas, or West Bengal Foundation Day, observed on June 20. The occasion commemorates the preservation of West Bengal within the Indian Union during the Partition of 1947. The Prime Minister’s greetings on the occasion carry political significance, coming after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s recent electoral success in the state.

For years, relations between the Centre and the state government were marked by political friction. Against this backdrop, the visit signals an effort to strengthen engagement with the people of West Bengal through development-focused initiatives. The emphasis on flagship welfare programmes such as PM-KISAN, Jal Jeevan Mission and Ayushman Bharat reflects the BJP’s continuing strategy of building political support through direct service delivery and beneficiary outreach.

PM-KISAN and Welfare Delivery

One of the key highlights of the visit is the release of the 23rd instalment under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme. More than ₹18,880 crore will be transferred directly to over 9.44 crore farmers across the country.

The programme remains one of India’s largest direct benefit transfer initiatives. Eligible farmers receive ₹6,000 annually in three equal instalments, helping supplement agricultural income and reduce financial vulnerability. The nationwide disbursement reinforces the government’s focus on technology-enabled welfare delivery and financial inclusion.

International Yoga Day in Kolkata

On June 21, Modi will participate in the 12th International Yoga Day celebrations at Kolkata’s Red Road. The event, being hosted in Kolkata for the first time at the national level, carries both symbolic and practical significance.

With the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” the programme seeks to promote preventive healthcare and wellness among all age groups. Over the years, yoga has emerged as an important element of India’s cultural diplomacy, enhancing the country’s global soft power while encouraging healthier lifestyles domestically.

Strengthening Defence Self-Reliance

Another major component of the visit is the commissioning of three indigenously designed naval platforms—INS Dunagiri, INS Agray and INS Sanshodhak—at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.

Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata, the vessels contain more than 75 per cent indigenous content. Their construction involved over 200 MSMEs, generating employment and strengthening domestic industrial capabilities. The commissioning reflects India’s growing emphasis on self-reliance in defence manufacturing and maritime preparedness.

From Welfare Delivery to Defence Self-Reliance

Modi’s West Bengal visit is significant not merely as a political engagement but as a demonstration of three interconnected priorities—welfare empowerment, cultural outreach and strategic self-sufficiency. By combining farmer support, global yoga advocacy and indigenous naval capability, the visit projects a governance model that links social development with national strength, while also underscoring West Bengal’s emerging importance in India’s developmental and defence landscape.
