Uddhav Sena Faces Another Rebellion Amid Defections

Growing Discontent Within the Uddhav Camp

Several Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs are increasingly unhappy with the leadership style and political approach of Uddhav Thackeray, creating fresh uncertainty within the party. Concerns over limited communication, inadequate organisational support, and a perceived disconnect between the leadership and elected representatives have steadily intensified over the past several months. What began as internal dissatisfaction has now evolved into a serious political challenge, raising fears of another major split in a party that is still recovering from the dramatic rupture of 2022.

Echoes of the 2022 Shiv Sena Split

The current crisis bears striking similarities to the rebellion led by Eknath Shinde in June 2022. That revolt split the original Shiv Sena, brought down the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, and forced Uddhav Thackeray to relinquish the chief minister's post. The subsequent legal and political battles resulted in Shinde's faction securing recognition as the official Shiv Sena, along with the party's iconic bow-and-arrow symbol, while Uddhav's camp was redesignated as Shiv Sena (UBT).

Nearly four years later, the party appears to be facing another existential challenge. Reports indicate that six to seven of the nine Lok Sabha MPs belonging to Shiv Sena (UBT) are exploring the possibility of joining the Shinde-led faction, threatening to significantly weaken Thackeray's parliamentary presence.

Allegations, Rumours and Political Manoeuvring

The latest developments gained momentum after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut alleged that attempts were being made to lure MPs away from the party. He claimed that legislators were being offered substantial financial incentives, including amounts reportedly reaching Rs 15 crore per MP. References to additional inducements, including the use of private jets, have surfaced in political discussions, although no verified evidence has emerged to substantiate such claims.

While party leaders have publicly dismissed reports of a coordinated defection drive, speculation has continued to dominate Maharashtra's political landscape.

Why MPs Are Looking Beyond Uddhav Thackeray

The dissatisfaction among MPs appears rooted in deeper organisational issues. Rebel leaders reportedly believe that Uddhav Thackeray has not maintained sufficient engagement with constituency-level leaders and parliamentarians. Complaints include infrequent interactions, inadequate support during local body elections, and a widening communication gap between the party leadership and its parliamentary wing.

Many MPs are said to feel that these shortcomings contributed to weak performances in several local electoral contests, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions where grassroots mobilisation remains critical.

Split Appears Inevitable as Delhi Meetings Intensify

The latest update suggests that the split may now be difficult to prevent. Seven MPs from the Uddhav camp reportedly met Shiv Sena leader Shrikant Shinde in Delhi, with senior leaders expected to hold further discussions on the next course of action. Rebel MPs are also believed to be exploring the formation of a separate parliamentary group before formally aligning with the Shinde faction.

Under anti-defection provisions, a sufficient number of MPs must move together to avoid disqualification, making the current mobilisation politically significant. The developments have fuelled speculation that a formal breakaway could be announced in the coming days.

A Defining Moment for Shiv Sena (UBT)

The unfolding crisis represents one of the most serious threats to Uddhav Thackeray's political leadership since the 2022 split. If the reported defections materialise, Shiv Sena (UBT) could suffer a major erosion of its parliamentary strength and organisational influence. For the NDA, the realignment would strengthen its position ahead of crucial parliamentary debates. For Uddhav Thackeray, however, the episode may become a defining test of whether he can rebuild cohesion within a party that continues to grapple with the aftershocks of rebellion and internal dissent.
