ED Attaches ₹940 Crore Assets Linked to Vikas Garg

Who is Vikas Garg and Why is ED Investigating Him?

Businessman and BJP economic cell convenor Vikas Garg has emerged as a key figure in one of India's biggest money laundering investigations linked to the alleged Mahadev Online Book/Skyexchange betting syndicate. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached assets worth ₹940.77 crore belonging to Garg, his family members and companies under his control, alleging that the properties represent proceeds of crime generated through illegal online betting operations. His arrest has added a political dimension to an investigation that has already seen assets worth nearly ₹3,800 crore attached, seized or frozen.

Mahadev Betting Network and Garg's Role

The Mahadev Online Book and its associated platforms, including Skyexchange, are accused of operating a vast illegal online betting network that allegedly channelled funds through shell companies, offshore entities and complex financial structures to conceal the origin of illicit proceeds.

The ED's Raipur Zonal Office has been spearheading the investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), targeting individuals allegedly involved in laundering betting proceeds into legitimate businesses and assets.

Vikas Garg occupies a unique position in the case. Besides being a businessman with interests across multiple sectors, he also served as a convenor in the BJP's economic cell, reportedly in Delhi. His dual identity as a corporate executive and political office-bearer has made the investigation particularly significant.

ED Action: Arrest and ₹940.77 Crore Asset Attachment

The ED first conducted searches at Garg-linked premises in April 2025, but the investigation gathered momentum in 2026.

On June 5, 2026, the agency provisionally attached assets worth ₹940.77 crore, alleging that the properties were acquired using money generated through illegal betting operations.

The attached assets include:

·       Residential and commercial properties in Delhi.

·       Land parcels and real estate holdings in Goa, Nainital and other locations.

·       Equity shares, investments and financial securities.

·       A significant investment in Eraaya Lifespaces, linked to the acquisition of US-based software company Ebix, where the ED alleges ₹765.77 crore originated from Mahadev/Skyexchange betting proceeds.

According to the agency, betting money was routed through Garg-controlled entities before being invested in high-value assets and corporate transactions.

On July 8, 2026, Garg was arrested by the ED. A Special PMLA Court in Chhattisgarh subsequently remanded him to 10 days of ED custody, allowing investigators to continue questioning him regarding the alleged money trail.

Key Findings in the ED Investigation

·       Illegal betting proceeds allegedly routed through multiple companies controlled by Vikas Garg.

·       ₹940.77 crore worth of assets provisionally attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

·       ₹765.77 crore allegedly invested in the Ebix acquisition through Eraaya Lifespaces using proceeds suspected to be linked to illegal betting.

·       Real estate, financial investments and corporate holdings identified as part of the alleged laundering network.

·       Investigation forms part of the larger ₹3,800-crore Mahadev Online Book money laundering probe.

Decoding the Investigation

·       Sophisticated money laundering model: The ED alleges that betting proceeds were layered through shell entities before being converted into real estate, investments and international corporate acquisitions, reflecting increasingly complex financial laundering techniques.

·       Aggressive enforcement strategy: The scale of asset attachment highlights the ED's growing reliance on PMLA provisions to freeze suspected proceeds of crime and dismantle illegal betting syndicates through financial disruption.

·       Political sensitivity: Garg's association with the BJP's economic cell has intensified scrutiny of the case. While critics question the political implications, the investigation also allows the government to argue that enforcement agencies are willing to act irrespective of political affiliation when evidence points to financial wrongdoing.

A Crucial Test for India's Anti-Money Laundering Framework

The Vikas Garg case has become one of the most significant chapters in India's crackdown on illegal online betting and financial crime. Beyond the immediate allegations, it highlights the growing sophistication of money laundering networks that combine digital betting platforms, shell companies, real estate and cross-border corporate acquisitions. As the investigation progresses and evidence is tested in court, the case is likely to shape future enforcement under the PMLA while influencing the broader debate on financial transparency, political accountability and regulation of India's rapidly expanding online betting ecosystem.
