What looked like a blockbuster sinkhole sequence unfolded for real in Bangkok on Wednesday (Sept 24): a roadway on Samsen Road caved in above an under-construction underground metro tunnel, leaving a gaping hole that quickly went viral online.
According to Nation Thailand, the collapse began when a tunnel station ceiling failed, pulling soil into the underground works and causing surface subsidence that affected nearby buildings. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the side toward Sanghi Bridge remains stable; the collapsed side sits over soft soil lacking adequate structural support.
Out of caution, Vajira Hospital, located at the scene, temporarily suspended outpatient services, asking about 3,500patients to rebook appointments. Social media reactions ranged from shock to comparisons with apocalyptic film scenes.
